episode three of New Tales from the Borderlands is called Capital Pains. In it, the main crew thinks of a way to use their newly acquired green healing crystal. And when they get it, their focus turns to earning the money needed to achieve their goals.
It’s a fun episode that’s different from a typical Borderlands tale. However, it is not a story that is told. The episode is filled with interactions, from big decisions to make to QTEs (quick events) that need to be completed. Here’s everything you need to do to beat him and collect the Vaultlanders in the process.
Shooting Friends at Fran’s
In the first scene of the episode – besides the summary of the opening story – all three protagonists are at Fran’s shop with LOU13.
There is a lot of dialog choices and button presses you must do. Some of them impact your skateboard score but don’t change much beyond that.
The first important decision was you choose which of your friends to shoot like Anu. This is to test the healing abilities of the crystal you picked up in the last episode.
You can choose LOU13, Fran or Octavio as a target. There are no major ramifications to your choice, as everyone lives. However, if you select LOU13, you will find that the crystal does not work on mechanical beings.
Make Anu’s Healing Device (includes how to get the Vasquez Vaultlander)
After the crystal tests are completed, Anu intends to repair his device and add the crystal to it. Therefore, you come to walk around the froyo shop, looking for items that will help you.
There are plenty of things in the shop to interact with, look at, or scan with. So, feel free to explore.
One thing you might want to check before picking up all the important items is the refrigerator in the back room.
Indeed, when you inspect the thing, the Vaultlander-loving guard from the last episode appears. He challenges you to another Vaultlander battle. Defeat his to acquire his silhouette.
The things you need to progress through the story are:
- Camera inside the jukebox: There is a jukebox on the other side of the giant hole shop. Scan it to find a camera inside. Interact with the machine to take out the camera.
- Bottle: Next to LOU13 and the giant hole in the wall is a water bottle that you need to pick up.
- Ribbon: Behind the counter, there’s tape with Fran’s logo all over it. Collect the scroll.
- Fuse: There’s a fuse box in the back room. Scan it and remove a fuse.
Anu sets out to create a more improvised version of his device. However, this does not work immediately. So it’s time for another slapping mini-game.
Rotate the device to slap the front camera and the bottle on the back.
Now Anu moves to the testing phase. So she cuts her hand, and you have to choose who you want to use the new healing device.
It’s a direct choice between Fran or Octavio. Both do the job.
Enter the sink or swim
In the second scene, the team is trying to get a spot on an investing show where they can get investors for their new invention.
The first obstacle is the bouncer, who won’t let you in. Still, it’s okay because he says his own name, which triggers LOU13 to shoot him in the head.
In hindsight, however, even LOU13 admits the bouncer offense may not have deserved death. But he still offers the money he got from the murder to the rest of the team.
It’s yours whether Octavio accepts or refuses the money. The first earns you money, but Anu will be mad at Octavio.
Interact with the competition
Out of respect for the fallen bouncer, LOU13 takes his place, while the rest of the crew goes inside. Immediately upon entering the place, they are greeted by another Sink Or Swim contestant named Pierre.
He tries to eliminate you and it works on Anu, as she starts to get very nervous about the upcoming show.
As Octavio you can give him advice on managing his nerveswhich she may try to use later – not that it really helps matters.
Don’t worry, though, because Octavio gets the guy back by hacking his invention, which results in a hacking mini-game. As always with these, each stage of the mini-game is randomized, but they are all easy to beat. This leads to Pierre makes a bad pitch and gets killed for it.
Toss over the sink or swim
It’s now up to you to go on the show and pitch.
To get started, you need to answer a few questions about your product. In the process, you can give a name to the thing.
Your answers don’t help the field, however, because the host plunges Anu into the shark-infested water regardless of what you say.
Then you have a long QTE where you have to grab the device and save Anu. She loses a leg in the conflict, but the healing gun solves the problem. As a result, another investor comes in and pays you the money the team needs
Talk to LOU13
After leaving the living room triumphantly, LOU13 approaches you. He has a meltdown about his constant killing.
So he asks Fran for advice. If you didn’t kill Hank in the first episode, you can make him feel better and improve his friendship with Fran by saying “you’re fine”.
Anu’s Trip to the Morgue (includes how to get the Roland Vaultlander)
In the final scene of the episode, Anu takes a trip to the morgue hoping to buy a corpse to test it. There you meet a strange woman and converse with her. In the convo you get the chance to name your business. After that you are put under the control of Anu.
Your objective is to recap the corpse in the center of the room. Before doing this, however, you can acquire the next Vaultlander. To do this, go to the back corner of the room and inspect cold locker it’s here.
Vautlander’s loving guard is inside and want another duel. Defeat him to acquire his figure.
Once you’ve done that and are done walking around the room, you can focus on putting your head back on the corpse.
Starts with take the leadthen go to candles in the corner of the room and grab the metal bar next to them.
Interact with the corpse to jam the bar into the neck hole – you’ll need to press a few buttons to achieve this. Now, do exactly the same for the head to put it on the other side of the bar.
After this horrible ordeal is over, the scary woman returns and ends up lock Anu in a coffin. The last interactive moment of the episode is a QTE where you have to try to clear your way. This is where episode three comes to an end.
