Making it easier to move patients from a bed to a cart and vice versa, Prof. Dr. Vinay Midha, Department of Textile Technology, Dr. BR Ambedkar NIT, Jalandhar, invented a “Patient Mover” which he even patented.

It is a user-friendly and inexpensive device, which converts sheets into stretchers and slides patients from bed to trolley and vice versa. The invention provides a patient moving device which consists of a bed sheet having a plurality of longitudinal sleeves, which rest on both sides of the patient and are capable of receiving a steel rod.

The device of the present invention improves patient and caregiver comfort, and saves time in the process of moving patients from an operating table to a cart, or from a cart to a bed, and vice versa. , with little effort, minimal discomfort and injury to the patient. Professor Midha said he carried out a pilot study at CMC Hospital, Ludhiana and filed a patent for the present invention, which was recently granted by the Indian Government Patent Office.

Explaining the usefulness of the device, the professor said: “The transfer of patients in hospitals and other medical establishments is generally carried out by partially lifting the patient and sliding him from one support to another using of sheets. Transferring during medical procedures or performing tests requires a lot of effort and time. It is important to save time for patients admitted urgently. The caregivers are also subjected to strong constraints during the transfer/sliding of the patient. In some cases, this transfer process may aggravate the patient’s injury or result in injury to the caregiver.

He said that over the years, various devices or support aids have been invented to facilitate the process of lifting or sliding patients from one support to another. “But all these aids are expensive, not very user-friendly and therefore little used in hospitals in developing countries. That’s where this device has an edge,” he said.
