WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita was evacuated early Friday afternoon due to a bomb threat.

A VA spokesperson said someone called the facility’s switchboard bomb threat at 12:20 p.m. The building was evacuated and searched.

With support from the Wichita Police Department and assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) K-9 unit, the facility was cleared completely around 2:30 p.m., no devices was not found.

“The evacuation was smooth, calm and the staff went above and beyond expectations, in fact still are,” said SE Longdon on Facebook. “These nurses and first responders are the best.”

In a statement, Medical Center Director Candace Ifabiyi said, “We are very proud of our staff for their swift action in evacuating our veterans and visitors to the facility. It is unfortunate that an unknown person has chosen to disrupt care for our veterans, and we will be working over the next few days to confirm new appointments for those affected.

Veterans whose appointments have been interrupted or canceled due to the evacuation do not need to take any action. Dole VA staff will contact them to reschedule appointments.

The incident is still under investigation by the VA Police Department.

The VA is located at 5500 East Kellogg, near Edgemoor.
