China-based vendors continue to outpace the market, in part due to significant growth in the domestic IoT market, which now accounts for over 55% of global cellular module demand.

4G LTE is the dominant technology as LTE Cat-1, NB-IoT and LTE-M are replacing 2G and 3G technologies in low to mid market segments. Shipments of LTE Cat-1 modules nearly tripled during the year, spurred by strong adoption in China, where chipsets from domestic vendors supporting the single-antenna LTE Cat-1 bis version cost around half the price compared to standard LTE Cat-1 platforms. The adoption of LTE Cat-1 in the country is somewhat at the expense of NB-IoT shipments which saw slower growth year over year. As in the previous year, shipments of NB-IoT modules were largely confined to China. Internationally, NB-IoT module shipments are in the mid-single digit millions, with demand driven primarily by smart gas meter and smart water meter deployments.
