We’ve all been there: you’re on a spontaneous day at the beach or have decided to wear shorts, and the hair gets in the way. Hair removal can be a problem no matter what route you take. Shaving or waxing can be time-consuming and high-maintenance, and laser hair removal seems intimidating and, to put it mildly, expensive. So when I got the chance to test out a supposedly painless home hair removal device (without ingrown hairs or razor bumps), I jumped at the chance.

Without dwelling too much on my relationship to body hair, shaving was (at least) a weekly ritual that I didn’t appreciate. Not to mention the occasional ingrown hair. I debated laser hair removal, but the timing never seemed right and I wasn’t sure about my pain tolerance. My only experience with laser hair removal was with electrolysis on small areas. After discovering that the SmoothSkin Pure Fit IPL device could mimic office results in as little as four weeks, I had to investigate and see exactly how the IPL process worked.

How does IPL work?

IPL (intense pulsed light) emits several wavelengths of light, which are converted into heat, to destroy the hair follicle. What sets IPL apart from other hair removal lasers is that it uses multiple wavelengths – as opposed to other lasers which use a single wavelength – to select pigment from the hair follicle only to minimize damage to surrounding skin. “Because laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle pigment, dark hair tends to respond better to laser hair removal,” Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD already said

Before diving into the full experience, I tested the laser on part of my leg to make sure I was laser aware. Before any SmoothSkin session, you need to remove the hair and create a clean canvas for the laser to work on. My favorite method is shaving, so I shaved my legs and armpits, which is where I tested the device.

Is the SmoothSkin Pure Fit easy to use?

Although the SmoothSkin Pure Fit IPL device comes with a smaller tip for precision areas like above the lip, I started with the larger tip for my legs. It is very user friendly: it will never zap light or heat without perfect contact with the skin (the dots on the side light up white when there is good contact and red when there is bad contact). contact). I loved this feature because no matter which direction I was going, there was no longer any need to try to get the laser in the right spot for it to work. The only downside to point indicators was that it can be difficult to have skin contact in certain areas (like shins or knees). I found that I had to rotate the laser vertically or horizontally in some places to get the right contact. To use the device on my legs and underarms, it took me about 20 minutes each time.

It’s painful?

At first, I was hesitant to start using the device, as I thought it would feel burning or painful. But, to my surprise, the multiple wavelengths made the pain level relatively low. You feel a sensation of warmth and a sensation similar to the snapping of rubber bands. The pain was so minimal that the warmth was pleasant. When I first used it, my pain level was two or three out of 10. Part of my legs hurt a little more (near my shins or ankles where there are more bones), and my armpits hurt more than my legs in general.

SkinSmooth says that after three to four weeks you start to see a noticeable lack of regrowth, and that was definitely the case for me. I didn’t think the technology would work that fast, but after three weeks the hairs started growing back slower in some places. By week five, I went about nine days without needing to shave. In fact, I went to Europe for a week halfway through this eight-week trial, forgot a razor, and didn’t even have to run to an emergency pharmacy to get one.

After using the SmoothSkin device once a week for eight weeks, I had very minimal hair growth. The brand recommends continuing the weekly sessions for 12 weeks, but I’m amazed at the results 75% of the way. Of course, there’s a catch: Due to the low level of pain and affordability compared to in-office laser treatments, touch-ups will need to be done every few weeks to keep regrowth at bay.

As someone who spent 20 minutes a week laser cutting my hair with the SmoothSkin, I learned a few tricks. First of all, if you shave, I recommend waiting about 10 minutes after showering to use the device because slightly damp skin makes the device more painful. Also, just because it doesn’t hurt doesn’t mean it doesn’t; I sometimes walked through areas more than once, and it didn’t add any value.

Final score: 5.0

I am still in awe of how this painless device has zapped almost all of my hair. For price and ease of use, I give the device full marks. The only downside I will say is that it’s not as permanent as laser hair removal, but I didn’t expect that to be so so I’m very pleased with these results.
